Chiropractic Care

What is Chiropractic Care?

The science of chiropractic centers around the spine.  The spine houses and protects the spinal cord, which is the “switchboard” through which nerve impulses are transmitted from the brain to all parts of the body.  In the event of an injury, a misaligned spine can interfere with nerve transmissions, inhibit spinal mobility, and cause pain and discomfort.  Chiropractic treatments help to minimize stress to the spine allowing the nervous system to perform optimally.

The heart ofchiropractic philosophy is simple: treat the problem- not just the symptoms.  If you only treat the symptoms, the underlying problem is still there and will continually re-surface until the problem is treated.  Chiropractic care is an effective method of treatment for many people who suffer from back pain, neck pain, headaches, and other neuromuscular disorders.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Chiropractic Care

How long will I need chiropractic care?

After patients achieve the relief they are striving for, many choose to continue with some type of periodic care for true health care, not sick care. These visits can help support the final stages of healing and help detect and resolve new problems before they become serious.

Can I have chiropractic care after back surgery?

Yes.  Rest assured that your chiropractor will avoid the surgically modified areas of your spine.  Surgery often causes instability above or below the involved level. These areas will be the focus of your chiropractic care.

Can chiropractic help me?

Chiropractic care will benefit almost everyone in some way, just as dental care will benefit almost everyone in some way.  How you respond to care depends on how long you have had your pain or symptoms, the severity of your case, your lifestyle, and your compliance to the care plan.

What makes the sound during the adjustment?

Lubricating fluids separate the bones of each spinal joint.  Some adjusting methods can produce a sound when the gas and fluids in the joint shift.  It’s much like opening a can of soda or removing a suction cup.  The sound is interesting, but isn’t a guide to the quality or value of the adjustment.

Can I adjust myself?

No.  Some people can make their joints “pop”, but that’s not an adjustment.  Adjustments are specific to the problem areas of the spine and take years to master.  Even your chiropractic doctor must see another practitioner to benefit from chiropractic care.

Can chiropractic help more than just back pain?

Absolutely.  It can help because when you receive a chiropractic adjustment, nerve interference is removed which allows your body to function better. Simply put, it helps your immune system kick in so that your body can heal itself.  Research has shown that patients receiving regular chiropractic care are healthier then those that do not.

How long until I'm feeling better?

Some patients experience almost instant pain relief.  Others discover it can take a couple of weeks depending on how serious the condition may be.  Many factors can affect the healing process.  How long have you had your problem?  Are you keeping your appointments? Are you getting the proper rest, exercise, and nutrition?  Do you smoke?  Are you in otherwise good condition?

What's an adjustment?

Chiropractic adjustments usually involve a quick gentle thrust that helps add motion to spinal joints that aren’t moving correctly.  Some methods use the doctor’s hands, a hand held instrument, or a chiropractic table to perform the adjustment.  There are many ways to adjust the spine and each patient will help determine which type of care is right for them.

Are chiropractic adjustments safe?

Yes.  A New Zealand government study found that adjustments are “remarkably safe.”  By avoiding drugs and risky surgery, chiropractic care enjoys an excellent track record.  A thorough exam can identify the rare person for whom chiropractic care might be unsuited.  Compare the statistics.  Adjustments are about 100 times safer than taking over-the-counter pain reliever.

Can infants and children be adjusted too?

Yes!  It is best to have children checked as early as possible.  This will ensure that they are fulfilling their own potential to live and grow as healthy as they can.  The birth process, no matter how natural, can affect an infant’s spine.  Some studies suggest that colic, unusual crying, poor appetite, ear infections, or poor sleeping habits can be signs of spinal discomfort.  Children are examined very carefully to determine if chiropractic care is appropriate and, if needed, receive a gentle adjustment involving very little pressure.
